There are few comedies that have the lasting power that Wet Hot American Summer has. The film, which was released in 2001, was not well received at the time. Critics didn’t understand it and the team behind the movie thought it was just going to be a thing they made that no one watched. Luckily, the film found cult classic status among fans and the rest is history.
Wet Hot American Summer is, for me, the kind of comedy film that helped me find what brand of comedy I loved best. It is why the mini-series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later are some of my favorite things to reference. The movie as a whole though was not widely accepted when it first premiered despite the cast now going on to be some of the biggest names working in Hollywood. It was Bradley Cooper’s first project straight out of the Actor’s Studio!
All of this has led to a love for what Wet Hot American Summer represents that is beautiful and 25 years in the making. To celebrate the film’s long shelf-life, I spoke with director David Wain for the film’s 25th anniversary!
Returning to the well

Part of what makes Wet Hot American Summer so hilarious is the way that the film perfectly sets up the mini-series that followed decades later. First Day of Camp and Ten Years Later are both mentioned within the first movie and it almost felt like Wain and company had an idea of what could happen with this comedy series. But in talking with Wain, it’s clear that these friends just wanted to make a fun dumb idea come to life and didn’t know what they’d one day be able to do with it.
“Of course not, it never occurred to me in the slightest,” Wain said. “I mean, we made this movie entirely designed as one thing and then not only that, when we were done, critics hated it. Nobody saw it, and we’re like, ‘All right, move on with our lives.’ And only when it started growing as a cult classic, did we start even just remotely entertaining our dreams of continuing to expand it. Of course, I love it so much though, and so, I loved the process of being like, ‘OK, let’s take every random detail in the movie and turn it into a backstory’ and I loved that process.”
