This year’s San Diego Comic Con was packed with incredible talent and incredible projects. One of those projects was the Rick and Morty spinoff President Curtis, which takes on the day-to-day escapades of Keith David’s President Curtis. These include crises such as interdimensional diplomacy, paranormal investigations, and unexplained phenomena that Rick Sanchez typically avoids.

Sitting down with David, Jim Rash, Stephanie Beatriz, along with creators Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, we discussed the new series, trying out new characters, and most importantly, if we could get a duet at some point in the show.

Making a good show was always the priority

Though both Siciliano and Harmon knew that making a spinoff was always going to be a gamble, that did not stop them from pushing forward. Siciliano was especially empathetic about how they approached the project, even when they did have their own doubts about whether it would be worth it or not.

I mean, of course, you want to make a good show. We spent a lot of time building this character out from Rick and Morty to make him stand on his own. And I think we spent a lot of time early on with that, but of course we want to make a good show. I think we want to just make a good funny show that’s sci-fi and action and obviously one that can stand on its own. That was the goal.

The focus as a work family evolved organically

As anybody who has seen the show knows, the relationship between Roe Banks (Beatriz), Curtis’s cyborg chief of staff, Special Agent Francis O’Doyle (Rash), a half-leprechaun member of the U.S. Secret Service, and Curtis strides the line between work relationship and sibling dynamic. According to Harmon and Siciliano, that happened naturally.

Something we didn’t anticipate early on when we started like writing these scripts was, you know, once Jim and Stephanie got in there, we we heard them together and the sibling dynamic kind of came from them, like what they brought to the characters. So, that was that wasn’t always part of it, and that kind of naturally came in.

Never say no to a potential duet

With David and Beatriz also starring in Amazon Prime’s Hazbin Hotel together, naturally some questions about a duet would arise. As every episode of President Curtis ends with Curtis recapping the episode in some very creative shower songs, it got us wondering if any other potential duets were in the future. Just not in the shower, of course.

“Yeah. Where’s that duet, guys?” Beatriz asked harmon and Siciliano. Their response? “We’ll keep that in mind.”

The series premiered on July 26, 2026, with new episodes every Sunday. Episodes will become available on HBO Max the following day.
