Bruce Campbell is a beloved actor and one that fans love seeing pop up in things. Becoming a fan favorite after starring in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, the actor became a staple of Raimi’s career. Now, the actor announced that he has a treatable but incurable cancer that is giving him a less than promising timeline.
Campbell was The Adam Carolla Show talking to comedian Adam Carolla when he revealed that he had a treatable cancer but didn’t disclose what kind. He did make it clear that it was a “five year deal.” Carolla followed up, asking Campbell if that meant he had five years left to live, and Campbell responded, saying “Give or take” to the comedian.
“I’ve decided, pretty specifically, to live with it, not die from it,” he said of his diagnosis to Carolla. “You can go down a massive rabbit hole. The cancer rabbit hole is enormous. You can go into focus groups of 10,000 guys who have what you have. I wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.” But he went on to say that it is “a whack-a-mole life” living with it. “Cancer compromises s— inside your body. So then you go, ‘deal with that,’ so then you deal with that. And then you sort of wait for it to then compromise something else. Meanwhile, you’re trying to put out the whole fire.”
But Campbell seems to be in high spirits, not letting his cancer diagnosis define him. “I’m managing,” he said. “That’s the word I’m gonna use. I’m managing my situation, and I’m gonna live my life as close to what is normal as I can for as long as I can. It’s just that simple.”

Campbell has continued to come back into the world of the Evil Dead as Ash Williams. From Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, to Army of Darkness, we saw an evolution to the character. Ash vs. the Evil Dead allowed Campbell to come back as Ash years later in a television show format and it only made us want more of his sarcastic but determined character.
It is a testament to Campbell as an actor that fans get excited every time he shows up in things. One of his cameos in Raimi’s Spider-Man universe is now iconic. He is just someone we all love to root for and his diagnosis is no different. Campbell clearly isn’t going down without a fight and hopefully, like Ash Williams, he can beat the odds.
