Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

Short Round of Deliberations and Outcome

Deadline reported that after just two days of deliberations at London’s Southwark Crown Court, the jury gave a verdict on seven total sexual charges against the film star. While he was found guilty of three of those seven charges, he was found not guilty for the others: two other counts of rape and one of attempted indecent assault, which was reduced down from indecent assault. These charges were based on allegations made by six separate women, who accused Brand of using his celebrity to harm them. Brand has maintained his innocent of all accusations and charges.

Brand was then remanded into custody until he’s officially sentenced on Monday. The sentencing carries a pretty hefty consequence considering a rape conviction in the U.K. can carry a life sentence in prison. The quickness of the deliberation makes sense for how quick the trial ran. It was anticipated to last for at least six weeks, but took less than four to reach a verdict.

But Brand’s chickens are still coming home to roost. Right after the verdicts were announced, BBC News reported that Brand was being investigated over more rape allegations made by two other women. The Metropolitan Police’s investigation “remains ongoing.”

Brand’s Trial Details

The aforementioned accusations happened between 1999 and 2009. Prosecution barrister Riel Karmy-Jones had described Brand as a calculating predator who used his celebrity status to ignore boundaries and abuse his victims. The six women, who did not know each other prior to the trial, came forward after the release of the 2023 documentary “Russell Brand: In Plain Sight” and subsequent news reports detailing similar allegations.

The court outline of the allegations details a pattern of behavior ranging from aggressive, non-consensual touching to incidents of oral, anal, and vaginal rape across multiple locations, including a 1999 incident in a Bournemouth hotel room. Brand has maintained his innocence throughout the trial. In police interviews, he declined to answer questions directly, submitting a statement asserting that he has no memory of the accusers while simultaneously insisting that all of his past sexual encounters were fully consensual.
