Gloria Steinem, one of the faces of the women’s liberation movement, has passed away at the age of 92 in her home in New York City. The news was released via a statement by the Gloria Steinem Foundation. Steinem spent a lot of her career as a journalist, using her platform to speak for women’s rights and becoming an important figure in history.
Shows like Mrs. America brought a fictionalized version of Steinem to life with Rose Byrne playing her. Plays like Liberation have explored feminism at the time of Steinem and more. And modern women owe a lot to Steinem and her fight for our rights and ability to defend ourselves. Steinem was the kind of “icon” who didn’t just speak up for herself. She was fighting for all women, learning and listening to them all when needed. Her work is why so many have our rights today.
“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves,” the post read. “Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.” Steinem was also the step mother of actor Christian Bale.
The post from the Gloria Steinem Foundation went on to praise Steinem’s love for starting the ball rolling for others to take on. “Gloria loved the tradition of lighting signal fires on hills to light the way to the other side of the mountain. Lighting your own candle for Gloria makes you part of this global and celestial community circle.”
