You hear that? It’s the sound of new muscles being born. Dave Bautista recently posted on his Instagram that he was a few weeks into his weight training for his role as Kratos in the upcoming “God of War” series from Prime Video. And the world rejoiced.
Bautista looked overjoyed at being back in his natural element and playing the legendary, rage-fueled Spartan warrior at the heart of the massively popular video game franchise. In a video posted to his account, he can be seen flexing his very buff physique before letting out a battle cry. “3rd week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin a bike! LFG!” Bautista wrote in the caption.
This marks a pretty big shift for the wrestler-turned-actor. After wrapping up his long run as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, Bautista intentionally slimmed down. Fans definitely noticed a leaner, more streamlined frame in his recent projects, particularly in “The Wrecking Crew.” They noticed and panicked to the point where Bautista had to speak out to reassure them he was fine, but had put on an “uncomfortable amount of weight” and felt better when he trimmed down. He wasn’t sick and he wasn’t on drugs, he just felt healthier at a smaller size.
What happens when you play a demigod?
However, playing a deity-slaying demigod requires a whole different level of body, and Bautista is clearly cooking in the gym to get back to his big man roots. Bautista stepped into the lead role last month following an unexpected casting shift. He replaced actor Ryan Hurst after Hurst tore a bicep during a stunt rehearsal on set.
Joining Bautista in the star-studded adaptation are Mandy Patinkin, Ed Skrein, Callum Vinson, Max Parker, Teresa Palmer, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alastair Duncan, Jeff Gulka, and Danny Woodburn. Led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, the series adapts the critically acclaimed 2018 video game reboot and its sequel.
The story follows “Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they venture across brutal Norse realms to scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a god, while Atreus works to teach his hardened father how to be human.”
Production is scheduled to resume this fall in Vancouver.
