DC Universe Takes on True Crime
Filming has begun on DC Studios’ next HBO streaming show, “The People v. Gorilla Grodd,” starring Skyler Gisondo (“Superman,” “Santa Clarita Diet”) as the Daily Planet’s resident photographer, Jimmy Olsen and we just got our first glimpse at the titular villainous gorilla.
“The People v. Gorilla Grodd” is an amusing, unique concept that centers around Jimmy Olsen hosting a true-crime docuseries, with the first season focusing on Flash archenemy, Gorilla Grodd. Grodd is a hyper-intelligent being who gained mind control powers after an alien encounter and he’ll be played by Jimmy Tatro (“American Vandal”).
In the candid set photos, Gorilla Grodd appears to be a man wearing a giant gorilla suit in a polite sweater vest and some graduation robes. This is likely a stand-in as there will be CGI effects layered throughout the series to show Grodd’s massive size. In defense of practical effects, this gorilla suit still looks great and nails the intellectual ape’s overall appearance. However, these could be reenactment scenes, which makes sense considering this is a true crime docuseries. Regardless, the hype train is officially leaving the station, because these images make it appear that DC Studios is leaning even more into its comics roots.
Capitalizing on the Success of “Superman”
With the same team (Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda) who did the hilarious, award-winning mockumentary “American Vandal,” this particular DC project will likely continue the streak of streaming excellence the studio has been on lately. Alongside Gisondo and Tatro, the “Superman” spin-off’s cast will include familiar faces from The Daily Planet: Mikaela Hoover (Cat Grant), Wendell Pierce (Perry White), and Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard).
DCTV has continuously gone deeper and weirder than its competitors when it comes to streaming, to much success. From the currently airing “Lanterns” to “The Penguin” to “Peacemaker,” the studio has had a sensational run, leading audiences to have an even higher expectation when it comes to these projects.
Who is Gorilla Grodd?
The gigantic, brilliant ape is typically a Flash villain, usually menacing Barry Allen or Wally West on the streets of Central City. The choice to have him be the focus of a Metropolis-set show is a curious one, but not out of the ordinary. Superman has faced the villain numerous times in the comics, the most recent being “Justice League Unlimited’s” ‘We Are Yesterday’ crossover story from 2025.
Grodd is super-intelligent, has the ability to control other people with his mind, and is exceptionally evil. He typically lords over Gorilla City, with delusions of grandeur and desires to take over the planet. “The People v. Gorilla Grodd” isn’t the first time Grodd will be seen in live-action. He was a prominent figure in CW’s “The Flash” television series, starring Grant Gustin, Tom Cavanagh, and Candice Patton, as well as “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” where Grodd attempted to murder a young Barack Obama.
Filming is currently underway at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, with no set release date.
