The hierarchy of the DC Universe will remain unchanged. For now.
Merger Leaves DC Studios Unaffected
With the courts removing the final roadblocks, shake-ups are already reportedly happening with the Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger closing by Oct. 6. James Gunn and Peter Safran, CO-CEOs of DC Studios, will remain the big bosses at DC Studios. Every DC fan breathes a sigh of relief.
After the merger is finalized, the newly formed mega-studio will be known as Skydance, with Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO, DC, TNT, CNN, and more under that massive umbrella. They even released a trailer showing off the sheer amount of IP, studios, and channels the company now has on its roster. With all these changes happening, it’s comforting for long-suffering DC fans to know that Gunn and Safran will remain in charge of the newly budding universe. According to Deadline’s sources, the two co-heads had a great meeting with their new boss, Skydance co-CEO David Ellison.
Opinions on the merger have been divided leaning towards negative, mostly on the impact on jobs with the consolidation of two major legacy studios. Time will tell how Paramount and WB’s content, schedules, and releases will be altered because of it. DC fans can take solace that their universe is safe from the merger gods, for the foreseeable future.
Safran and Gunn to Forge Ahead
The pair have been enjoying moderate success with the new DC Universe that spans film and television. Last year’s “Superman” proved the Boy Scout was still financially viable, even if his cousin struggled this year with her solo outing. Currently, the lower-budget “Clayface” will head to theaters Oct. 23, while “Lanterns” on HBO is enjoying some of the channel’s highest streaming numbers for a comic book show. Long-awaited, “The Batman Part II” is coming to theaters in February 2028.
The news should be a relief for Gunn, considering he’s got his hands full right now filming the “Superman” follow-up, “Man of Tomorrow,” which is flying into theaters July 9, 2027. The movie will focus on a reluctant team-up between Kal-El and his nemesis, Lex Luthor, to take on a much bigger threat: Brainiac.
