Clayface has always been one of the most interesting of Batman’s villain gallery. After all, he’s the villain who goes down the villain route after something causes him to be able to freely alter his form. As though his body was made of clay, hence his supervillain name. However, with great power comes great responsibility, with this guy’s responsibility being that he needs to learn to how to control his powers or else his face (and his body) starts running like watery clay. You can definitely see the horror potential in those powers. Thus, it’s easy to see how DC Studios saw that horror potential for their upcoming live-action film that stars that very villain, potentially giving us a very interestingly horrific movie to look forward to. At least, whenever it comes out. Fortunately, we now know exactly when that will be.
DC Studios is proud to deliver an official final trailer for their upcoming DC horror movie simply titled Clayface. That final trailer also reveals at the very end at we will be able to finally see DC’s horrific interpretation of this classic member of Gotham’s Rogue’s Gallery on October 23, 2026. All with Tom Rhys Harries playing the titular Clayface. Joining Harries in the starring roles will be Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan; as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. With James Watkins still directing using a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.

Synopsis
DC Studios’ “Clayface” is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult favorite villain from Gotham’s Rogues’ Gallery.
Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

Honestly, if we’re going to judge Clayface solely on that final trailer, it already looks like a potentially very interesting horror movie. With emphasis on the horror. In particular: body horror seems to be the central theme of this movie due to Matt Hegen’s inability to control his newfound shapeshifting powers after taking an experimental medical procedure to restore his face after a gruesome mutilation. The most notable scene here is one taking place in a crowded airliner during a heavy period of turbulence when Hegen appears to be desperately trying to control his running face in the midst of so much panic. Even resorting to taking a pair of scissors in an attempt to cut his half-melted right eye back open. It’s all quite gruesome, and will certainly satisfy all of you horror fans out there.
Really, the only thing I’d complain about is that this version of Clayface appears to be straight. Why am I complaining about this when a lot of DC characters are? It’s because in Batman: The Animated Series, that version of Matt Hagen was very clearly in a gay relationship with his male stand-in Teddy Lupus. By making this live-action Matt Hagen straight, DC Studios missed a perfectly good opportunity to make this a movie an allegory about the LGBTQ+ experience. Just saying.
