Post Summary

Jimmy Tatro is making his way to the DC Universe with Jimmy Olsen. Deadline is reporting that Tatro is in talks to join the live-action Superman spinoff series DC Crime. He’ll be taking the role of Gorilla Grodd in the series. DC Crime hasn’t yet gotten a greenlight from the network but has been in development since Superman released last year.

Who Is Gorilla Grodd?

DC describes the character as “a hyper-intelligent telepathic ape who has sought to rule both the simian and human worlds, though the Flash has frequently thwarted his plans.”

The show DC Crime is billed as a true crime docuseries with Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo) hosting. He previously played the role in Superman as Clark Kent’s right hand man and the love interest of Eve Tesmacher. Season 1 will focus on Gorilla Grodd, who normally is a villain for The Flash.

Grodd is an incredibly powerful being with psychic powers and other skills after an encounter with an alien spaceship. The character got his start in 1959 and has showed up in live-action previously in the DC Arrow-verse shows.

Who Is Making DC Crime?

DC Crime is coming from DC Studios and comes from the creators of the American Vandal series on Netflix. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault both created that show, which ran for two season on Netflix. It also starred Jimmy Tatro for its first season. American Vandal was a true-crime satire show, which is similar to what DC Crime will be. They’re going to write, executive produce, and showrun the series. DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will EP along with Galen Vaisman. Warner Bros. Television is producing the show.

Jimmy Tatro can most recently be seen in Scream 7. He was in the opening scene of the film and stole the show. He’s also been in The Real Bros Of Simi Valley, Modern Family, and Home Economics.

Hopefully This Is Good, But Its A Strange Move

So far with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision of the DC Universe, we’ve had one Superman movie, Supergirl, and a couple of TV shows. There’s no information or news on the front of Wonder Woman or Batman coming to the universe so far. For audiences that want these big-time characters, it’s nice to have side stories about other characters, but the foundation is built upon the Justice League for a reason.

So like comic books, it’s awesome to have side stories that accentuate that main story, but you need the foundation of the main story. An event is only as strong as the main portion. Gorilla Grodd is a cool character, and Jimmy Olsen was fun to watch in Superman, but we’ll have to see if this idea is more than just a concept that sounds good. American Vandal was a fantastic watch and Jimmy Tatro is a great performer, so the ingredients are all there for this to be successful.

We’ll keep you updated on all things DC as we get more news.
