Post Summary
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are going BIG for their replacement for Kratos in God Of War. Dave Bautista is in talks to take over for Ryan Hurst in the upcoming TV series. The role is being recast after Ryan Hurst had to drop out from an injury during a stunt on the series. He tore his bicep almost four months into the shoot. That injury would set the series back more than they wanted to, necessitating the recast.
A Costly Choice But A Great One For Kratos
Bautista joins the series after production paused immediately following Hurst’s injury. In the following weeks, the decision was made to recast the role instead of waiting and production with Dave Bautista should begin in mid-October after some prep in September. The show is based in Vancouver and will be filming there once again.
Amazon MGM Studios is no stranger to Dave Bautista. He recently wrapped shooting on their reboot of the Highlander series with Henry Cavill. That film required him to bulk up, so he doesn’t need much prep in regards to the physical aspect of playing Kratos.
God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

A Different Take On Kratos
After we saw the first-look image from the series with Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, Atreus, fans were questioning the series a bit. This new change to Dave Bautista should assuage any concerns. The man knows how to act and can be a big brooding action star if he needs to be. The rest of the cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions. In addition to Moore, executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis co-executive produce.
This is just the second time in his career that Bautista is starring in a series regular role. His first was in the AppleTV series See. He also starred in the Amazon MGM Studios film The Wrecking Crew alongside Jason Momoa earlier this year and is in their sequel Road House 2.
He also has the films Ally, Highlander, and Alpha Gang coming up.
