James Gunn Confirms Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis for ‘Mister Miracle’

The era of the old gods is over, it’s time for the New Gods.

A Match Made in Apokolips

After Peter Safran broke the news, James Gunn has officially confirmed that Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis have been cast as the iconic DC couple Mister Miracle and Big Barda respectively. The forthcoming DC Universe animated series is based on Tom King’s lauded “Mister Miracle” book and he will also be helming the show.

The new art Gunn shared on his social accounts show Hutcherson and Davis as their characters, and, coupling with the fact that he is a bit shorter than Davis, the visual appeal is already there. This is also the first bit of news about the series since King gave details in March at WonderCon. Luckily for fans of the comic series, King is heavily involved with the writing and development of the animated version. It’s likely what happened with the slight mistranslation of King’s other book, “Supergirl,” won’t happen here.

According to King, the Scott Free of the animated show will have the same background as the Scott we know and love from the comics: an escape artist; a short king who has severe childhood trauma, daddy issues, and a love for Barda that runs deep.

A Step Into DC’s Celestial Mythos

Casual DC viewers are in for a delight as the DC Universe turns its eye to the heavens. The New Gods, New Genesis, Apokolips, Darkseid, Highfather, the Female Furies, Granny Goodness, Orion, Lightray, and so many other amazing Jack Kirby-created characters are about to finally get their shine. This part of the DCU is a lot more cosmic, surreal, magical, with a tendency to go slightly religious, but never preachy. It’s one of the more visual striking parts of the comics, with various gods, demons, and hybrids vying for control and fighting for power.

King’s Eisner-winning “Mister Miracle” book is gorgeously drawn by Mitch Gerads and is a harrowing look at PTSD, the aftermath of war, suicidal ideation, and love of all kinds. It’s a heavy book with dark themes that walks the balance between a comic book series and therapy. It’s a Black Label book. so not really for kids, although there are children in it (heavy sigh).

The show is currently in development with no release date.
