DC Taps ‘Evil Dead Wrath’ Writer for John Constantine Film

DC’s exploration of the weird and creepy looks to continue.

Hellblazer Making His Way Back to the Big Screen

DC Vertigo/Black Label/Justice League Dark fans, rejoice! According to Deadline, DC Studios has got “Evil Dead Wrath” writer and director, Francis Galluppi, working on a script for a John Constantine movie. DC, of course, has no comment on the matter, which tracks because this is a whisper of news, but it’s still huge. With “Clayface” slugging his way through the box office (this is a compliment), DC is likely looking back into their catalogue for more horror-focused characters and projects. Horror has been pretty successful for Warner Bros. lately and DC’s latest entry affirms that.

Constantine grew incredibly popular in the CW era of “Legends of Tomorrow,” (thanks to Matt Ryan) which led to the character appearing in multiple iterations over the course of the last decade (“Harley Quinn” over on HBO Max, various Warner Bros. Animation films, etc.). However, the last time the chain-smoking magic man made an appearance in theaters was when Keanu Reeves was playing him in 2005.

Created by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, the self-destructive British detective made his debut in “The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37” in 1985. He’s since had numerous romances, been killed several times, was used in weird ways by many people, and is often the one sacrificing for his friends and won’t admit he’s a big softie. There’s a lot of gold Galluppi can mine from this character.

What Kind of Constantine Could We Get?

Galluppi isn’t a newcomer to the Warner Bros. ecosystem. He has “Evil Dead Wrath” coming for New Line Cinema in April 2028. The film is supposed to be set in 1972, predating everything, according to producer Rob Tapert. Could this be an indicator for what era this Constantine movie will take place in? Is this film going to even be in the Gunn Universe or separate? Will this story take place in the past, across generations, or in modern times? Hellblazer could work with any of these directions.

DC knows—hopefully—not to overcomplicate a John Constantine film. All anyone needs to make his film work is magic tricks, well-time quips, an exploration of his bisexuality without making it a lesson, and get to the core of who he is: a selfish, unselfish person wracked with guilt, who may try to do the right thing every so often.
