‘Nobody Wants This’ Has One Great Episode in Season 3 and It’s All Because of New York

Nobody Wants This returned for its third season on Netflix and the show has, for lack of a better way of explaining it, lost a lot of its charm. The constant struggle of Noah (Adam Brody) and Joanne (Kristen Bell) has resulted in the two in love, living together, and planning their lives together now that Joanne is converting. It’s almost exhausting to experience three seasons in now. But the joy of the show has always been Sasha (Timothy Simmons) and Morgan’s (Justine Lupe) will they, won’t they.

In season 3, there’s an entire episode all about Morgan and Sasha out in New York together when Morgan has an appearance on Watch What Happens Live planned. Filled with tropes like two people, one bed, the episode itself is mainly just focused on these two with only a brief check in on Noah and Joanne. And it leads to one of the most romantic and sweet episodes of the entire season.

Yes, a lot of the forward motion gets taken back thanks to how Nobody Wants This operates but for the most part, all of episode 7 of season 3 is set around the feelings that both Sasha and Morgan have ignored for the first two seasons. And even though it was heavy on the romantic tropes and a little bit predictable, there was something about it that worked as a nice reprieve in the middle of the season. And any romantic moment that uses “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” by LCD Soundsystem is a good one in my book.

New York is really the city of romance

"A young woman in a dress and a man in a plaid shirt sit at a small outdoor restaurant table at night, smiling and talking, with food and drinks on the table and city lights in the background."

As a chosen New Yorker, there is something about watching love blossom in the city that really works for me and when it comes to Sasha and Morgan, you can tell their love is complex and beautiful. They constantly worry about the situation they’re putting others in. It leads to a mess of an ending to the season but the bright spot is the time they shared in New York.

As Sasha and Morgan are walking along the High Line, the two come to realize that they’re feelings for each other can’t cloud their other relationships. And while it is always frustrating to feel the push and pull of a will they, won’t they, the build up throughout the episode was beyond worth it. The build up in the song to Sasha standing outside of Morgan’s door, the way they both try to do the right thing…all of it makes for a great “at least” moment between them.

We leave the entire season with Morgan and Sasha at odds with each other, the entire family fighting and Esther (Jackie Tohn) found out about what happened in New York. To call it a mess is being kind. But that New York episode made a generally bland season just a bit better because the two got to experience the magic and love that the city has. Even if it ended in a fiery disaster.
