Sam Raimi returned to the director’s chair for Send Help earlier this year and now he’s heading back to the well with the same writers to remake Magic for Lionsgate. Deadline is reporting that Raimi has joined on as director for a modern adaptation of the William Goldman novel that spawned the 1978 film. Richard Attenborough directed that original film and it starred Anthony Hopkins. In the film, Hopkins played a ventriloquist who finds himself controlled by a malicious and evil puppet at a time when he finds romance. Hopkins gave an excellent performance in the film that was shocking and creepy.
Sam Raimi was already on board to produce the film alongside Roy Lee, but now he’s also directing it. He’ll be joined by Chris Hammond, Tim Sullivan, Zainab Azizi, Nathan Kahane, and Paul Fishkin as producers on the film. The project is written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who co-wrote Send Help for 20th Century Studios.
“Sam is the dream director for this project — in fact, his coming aboard represents one of the truly great matches of director and material,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “The script is fantastic, and we could not be more excited to see Sam’s direction and creative vision take it to another level. We are absolutely thrilled he has chosen to direct the film.”
What Has Sam Raimi Been Up To?

Sam Raimi’s latest film, Send Help was his first directing gig since he did Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness for Marvel Studios. Send Help was number one at the box office for two weeks earlier this year and has grossed over $100 million at the box office so far. He’s known for directing the first three Evil Dead films, the Spider-Man trilogy, and Darkman.
