Strike A Pose
The Devil Wears Prada 2 helped kick of this summer’s box office bonanza. We confess, our friend Molly Rogers’ looks had a lot to do with that. From the moment images crept their way online from the new movie, fans couldn’t stop obsessing over their favorite looks.
That Hollywood Show sat down with the costume designer to talk about approaching this franchise again. We also discussed how to make Andy feel like she’s evolved after all this time.

Molly Rogers Talks The Devil Wears Prada 2
With a movie as beloved as The Devil Wears Prada, there were bound to be some fans nervous about a sequel. The looks that Rogers curated quickly put a lot of those fears to bed. But, the task still took a lot of thought for the costume designer.
“I mean, having been on the first one with and how beloved that movie is. Yes. Daunting,” Rogers smirked when I asked about returning. “Okay. But as it says, beloved, it is I who is the fan. [The movie] is also beloved by me and memorized by me. I love and worship that first movie. So the normal reaction would have been fear, absolute fear.”
“How do you measure up to something so perfect that people worship and they’re like, ‘No, don’t make it!’,” she pondered. “But all the actors, writer and director, we were all like ‘We can only do as best as we possibly can, because everybody wants to see this again!’ Right? So, I think if I had been crippled by fear, I would have failed. And, I would have been doubting choices or unsure, but I was excited! I knew a million girls would kill to be doing what I was doing. I approached it with joy and excitement.”
Clothes Telling A Story
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is Anne Hathaway’s Andy strutting down the street in a multi colored dress. (Gabriela Hearst’s Patchwork Dress, stunning.) I had to ask about choosing a look that signified where Andy is at after all this time in the film. Choosing to go with dress instead of more recognizably high fashion look with something debated inside the costume department.
“That was a big, big discussion. There was a group of voices petitioning for something startlingly runway, okay, which would have made it a commercial for some brand,” Rogers recalled as she pointed out one of the highlights from the first film. “Like the thigh-high Chanel boots!”
She had more for us, “But, they didn’t win,” the designer continued. “Because the bigger consensus in my department was, when she goes into that closet and sees whatever that is, it needs to reflect, kind of like when The Wizard of Oz turns from black and white to color. It needs to reflect that she has crossed a bridge at Runway where she is.”
“Dressing for an occasion, but she still threw an Andy idea with it! The bucket hat,” Rogers argued. “So for her to be so precious going into the Jitney, The Hampton Jitney in ‘Look #14,’ I could not get behind that. It just would have been a commercial. And we had that. We did that in the first movie.”
“Then, she was a fish out of water and then she put these thigh-high Chanel boots on,” she smiled. “And, it was like boom, Cinderella! So, I don’t think twenty years later, she would have reached for or pointed to something so trendy!”
