The Punisher: One Last Kill Director Explains Cameo by Jon Bernthal’s Daughter

Jon Bernthal in The Punisher: One Last Kill.

The Punisher: One Last Kill is out now on Disney+ and its safe to say that Frank Castle is back. The director of the special, Reinaldo Marcus Green sat down with our friend Brandon Davis to talk all things about the Marvel Television special. In an episode of The Brandon Davis Show provided to ThatHollywoodShow for an exclusive early listen, they talked all about Frank Castle and even talked about a cameo made by Jon Berthal’s daughter.

“We cast his daughter, which I think he was a little reluctant to do and I understand that, you know, to put your children in a film. But I think in thinking about this character and thinking about the depths that that Frank is in this particular Special,” Green said.  “I knew that if he was going to be looking at his real daughter on screen, that that was going to bring a different level of emotionality to it. We certainly use that to watch John go there because it was real.”

Addie, Jon’s daughter appears in the graveyard hallucination scene where Frank Castle cries out to his family and friends he’s lost in his life.

Having previously worked with Bernthal on King Richard and We Own This City, Green had met Bernthal’s daughter in the past. “I had met Addie as a tiny, small child. And so I kind of watched her grow up,” Green said. “When the special came up and the girl, you know, I’m reading the age of the the girl, I said, ‘That’s Addie.’ It just clicked and you could see Jon, almost like the protector of all things, like, ‘Don’t go there, man.’ But I was like, but ‘Are you sure?’ Somehow he listened to me and I’m really grateful that he did. First of all, she’s terrific. You can see she’s got a bright future. And whatever she does, if she continues in acting or not.”

Green added, “In terms of motivation, there’s no single greater motivation than a daughter to a father. So, that was certainly pulling on heartstrings, even for myself. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the cemetery when we were shooting that day. Jon looked at me and said, ‘Look, we don’t got too many of these.’”

The Punisher: One Last Kill is already out on Disney+ for fans to watch.
