The upcoming Magic: the Gathering movie from Hasbro and Legendary has found its first star. Deadline is reporting that Maya Hawke is in talks to join the upcoming movie. Her role is a secret for now. The film will be the first live-action feature film from the world’s most popular trading-card game. Hasbro and Legendary are also looking to make an entire multimedia universe around the game with movies, TV, and more. Matt Johnson will direct the film.
According to Deadline, the cast is expected to have an ensemble feel, but Hawke’s role will be one of the key ones in the project. They wanted her and she was the first star they offered a role to. As for the rest of the cast or even the time period of the movie, that’s unknown at this time. Magic has a wide and varied story that includes multiple multi-year stories that they’ve told across sets in the past. The early part of the game included a story about the brothers Mishra and Urza and the invasion of a species known as the Phyrexians. Later stories include tales about characters known as Planeswalkers who have the ability to move between worlds know as planes.
The current phase of the game tells one-off stories and then has sets called Universes Beyond which are based on licensed IP like Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and others. The game launched in 1993 and quickly became the most-played and popular TCG of all-time. Through the years, popularity has waxed and waned, but at the current moment, the game is the biggest money-maker for Hasbro in their portfolio.
Who Is Maya Hawke?
You might know Maya Hawke from her turn in Netflix’s Stranger Things as Robin. That role catapulted her into stardom. Her parents are Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, but she’s quickly outgrown the nepo baby label with roles in things like Stranger Things, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Asteroid City, Inside Out 2, Do Revenge, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood from Quentin Tarantino.
As for her upcoming projects, she has the previously mentioned Sunrise on the Reaping coming out soon and Wishful Thinking. She’s also starring in the upcoming Netflix series God of the Woods.
If I can speculate on what role she’s going to play in the upcoming movie, one of the planeswalkers- Nissa, Chandra, or Liliana would make plenty of sense. But until we know the time period that they’re covering, we’re in the dark.
