Genndy Tartakovsky Is Doing ‘Conan The Barbarian’ As His Next Animated Series

Conan the Barbarian.

Post Summary

Conan the Barbarian is getting a new adaptation from animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky. The Wrap is reporting from Annecy Animation Film Festival that Prime Video and Cartoon Network Studios are working on an animated series based on the classic character. Genndy first pitched a series for Conan back in 2008 but its just now getting off the ground.

A New Era For Conan

Various streamers and networks were interested in the new pitch for Conan the Barbarian, but Prime Video were the ones that brought it home. The series is just enterting development, so we won’t get anything about it for a bit. At Annecy, Genndy appeared via video and told the crowd about it being early and they could have animatics or animation the year after.

Here’s the official logline for the new series:

“After finding love in the pirate queen, Bêlit, a battle-hardened Conan defies gods, fate and even death to save her from a dark sorcery that threatens to destroy everything.”

A Bit Side-Questy, But A Big Moment At The End

Genndy Tartakovsky will serve as Executive Producer and Showrunner for the series and is joined by Darrick Bachman, Fred Malmberg, and Mark Wheeler as EPs. This is the first time since 2003’s Clone Wars that Tartakovsky is working with an existing IP. Conan The Barbarian was created and written by Robert E. Howard in 1932. It later became a film series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which should have a third film coming soon.

Tartakovsky’s work with Primal looks very influenced by Howard’s writings, including the art style and tone of the series. This won’t be the first time that he’s worked with Cartoon Network Studios as well, most of his famous shows have been on the network in some form or fashion including Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.

For fans of Tartakovsky, this is surely great news that he’s working on something as iconic as Conan.

We’ll keep you updated on all things Conan the Barbarian as we get news.
