‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Lands Deal with Universal, Blumhouse Atomic Monster

Hollywood seems to be a bit obsessed with Obsession director Curry Barker, and it is well-founded. Barker’s film about a wish gone terribly wrong has been the hit of the summer and has since had many in Hollywood clamoring for a chance to get to be the ones to ink his next deal. Now the rumors can be laid to rest, as his next project has found a home, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

In what is described as a rich eight-figure deal, Barker will write, produce, and direct his third film for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal. This keeps him within the Universal family. Obsession was released by Focus Features, who are also releasing his already shot second feature, Anything But Ghosts, which Barker writes, directs, and stars in.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster was also involved with Obsession after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and is a production entity for Anything But Ghosts. For Barker’s unnamed third film it will be back in the same capacity.

The plot is currently kept under wraps, but is described as “a Barker original horror idea.” The idea was bought off a pitch Barker had made to Universal.

“Curry Barker has an exceptional ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, pairing an innate instinct for what resonates with audiences with extraordinary filmmaking prowess,” said NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him.”

Why Everyone Can’t Stop Talking About Obsession

Since its release on May 15, Obsession has become Focus Features’ highest-grossing release of all time. A pop-culture phenomenon, it has also driven conversations online about gender equality, as well as discussions about pay rates in film. It is currently still in theaters and is on track to surpass $300 million worldwide this weekend.
