The Good Of Super Troopers 3
It might sound crazy but the first Super Troopers film is 25 years old. All the hilarity and fun of that film trickles down to where we are in 2026 with Super Troopers 3. The Broken Lizard gang all make their return with Thorny, Farva, Mac, Rabbit, and Foster returning alongside Captain Todd Markowski (Nat Faxon), with rookie Coy Burns (Andrew Dismukes), and newcomers Sarita (Hannah Simone), and Baker Buchanan (Chace Crawford). The story here revolves around Farva getting married to Thorny’s sister Sarita. Thorny has to try his hardest to show his family who Farva really is while the rest of the troopers figure out why Maple Syrup trucks in the area are getting attacked.
Yes, the movie is that simple, and it doesn’t really need to be any more complex. At this point in the series, they’ve recognized that we just like seeing these guys hang out and get into stupid situations. Each of the different troopers gets their time to shine though, with Mac’s subplot involving a Canadian electric cruiser being among the funniest. Our old Captain, O’Hagen even gets some time to shine while still busting the balls of the current crop of troopers.
What really works though, is that Super Troopers 3 knows these guys are aging. They act like teenage boys but have grey hair. That’s really the best part of the film is that it KNOWS that they’re not in their prime any longer. But comedy doesn’t have an age, and these guys know how to make people laugh, even in the most juvenile ways.
The Bad Of Super Troopers 3
So that juvenile humor that comes out in the film is great, but it does lead to a bit of a feeling of “playing the hits”. For some, they’re going to go see a third Super Troopers movie to see the hits. We get a “mustache ride” callback, hell, even “liter ‘a cola” gets brought back. For me, the best jokes that landed weren’t these older callbacks though. It was the new ones, like seeing Markowski scream-throw up after ingesting too many mushrooms.
There are actually multiple “twists” in the film with one that lands hilariously and another that didn’t work as well. The entire red herring of the Maple Syrup trucks comes into play later in the film, but it feels like it falls a bit flat compared to the rest of the film.
Outside of that, this is really about your own personal taste. If you like the irreverent, juvenile stylings of Broken Lizard, this is for you. If you want some more sophistication from your comedy and someone screaming, throwing up doesn’t sound like a fun time, this is not the movie to see.
The Boys Are Back And Maybe Not Better Than Ever, But Still Solid
Between a maple syrup bukkake, a snake bite, some tremendous performances from Thorny’s parents (Sakina Jaffrey and Iqbal Theba), Super Troopers 3 gives plenty of laughs for some familiar friends to audiences. A comedy like this in theaters is increasingly rare these days but Broken Lizard shows that they can still make people laugh in a theater.
