Kirby is going somewhere he has never quite gone before. Nintendo has revealed Kirby and the World Beyond, a brand new adventure coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2027.
The game made a surprise appearance during Nintendo’s September 2026 Direct, where Kirby closed out the presentation with its first gameplay trailer. The reveal showed off plenty of familiar Kirby action, including the pink hero using his trademark copy abilities to take down enemies.
Kirby Goes Bigger
While the core Kirby formula remains intact, Kirby and the World Beyond looks like it could be taking the series in a much more open direction.
The gameplay shown in the trailer suggests Nintendo is giving Kirby a considerably larger world to explore. Rather than simply moving through a straightforward series of stages, the new adventure appears to give players more freedom to explore and discover what lies beyond the usual boundaries of a Kirby game.
That could make The World Beyond one of the biggest departures for the franchise yet. Kirby has experimented with different gameplay styles over the years, but this looks like a particularly ambitious step for the series.
Kirby’s Copy Abilities Return
Of course, Nintendo is not throwing away everything that makes Kirby, well, Kirby. The trailer confirms that his familiar copy abilities will once again play a major role in the adventure.
Kirby can still inhale enemies and use their abilities to battle his way through the world. That familiar mechanic should provide some welcome continuity as Nintendo expands the scale of the series.
The trailer only offered an early look at what Nintendo has planned, so there are still plenty of questions surrounding the game. Nintendo has yet to reveal the full scope of the world, additional abilities, or exactly how open the adventure will be.
A New World for Kirby
Closing out the September Nintendo Direct with Kirby was certainly a way to grab everyone’s attention. The pink hero may be one of Nintendo’s most recognizable characters, but Kirby and the World Beyond looks ready to push the character into some unfamiliar territory.
With a larger world, familiar copy abilities and a release planned for Nintendo Switch 2, this could become one of Kirby’s most ambitious adventures yet. Nintendo is clearly betting that Kirby fans are ready to explore beyond the traditional boundaries of the series.
