24 years before Katniss Everdeen became the Mockingjay, it was another District 12 tribute who tried to bring the Hunger Games crashing down. Lionsgate has released the new trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, offering a closer look at Joseph Zada’s young Haymitch Abernathy and the brutal competition that changed him forever.
The prequel is set during the 50th Hunger Games, and the anniversary edition doubles the number of competitors, forcing 48 tributes into the Capitol’s deadliest spectacle yet. Ralph Fiennes takes over the role of Snow as the future dictator tightens his grip on Panem. The ensemble also includes Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Ben Wang.
Francis Lawrence is returning to direct, having helmed the previous four entries in the franchise, including the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The film will release in theaters on November 20, 2026.

About Sunrise on the Reaping
Set in the world of Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the story follows Haymitch into the arena, where he forms an unlikely alliance with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner (Mckenna Grace) and joins a coalition determined to challenge the Capitol’s control under President Snow (Ralph Fiennes). As the competition unfolds, Haymitch risks everything to take down the Games from within the arena — setting in motion the rebellion that will change Panem forever.
