DC Studios Has Found A New Robin… For ‘Dynamic Duo’

DC Studios is in the midst of its grand plan for a film slate and we finally have news about who will be playing Robin, at least, who’ll be playing Robin in the upcoming animated feature Dynamic Duo. Collider has the scoop on who will be voicing Dick Grayson from an interview they did with Peter Safran and James Gunn.

Safran confirmed that Mason Thames, star of The Black Phone and How To Train Your Dragon will voice Dick Grayson in the film. The film tells the story of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as they’re first friends and then later drift apart as they get older. They’re the first two Robins for Batman. In the comics, Grayson was an orphaned circus performer, while Jason was a street-smart kid that Batman took under his wing. Dynamic Duo hits theaters on September 22nd, 2028.

Here’s what Safran had to say about the film.

“We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, to be part of DC Studios, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. And he came in, and auditioned the s*** out of it, and was awesome. He’s a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this. He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices, he came over with his dad at the time, and we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”

Not Your Average Animated Movie For DC Studios

Dynamic Duo isn’t just a normal animated film though. They’re using puppetry from Swaybox Studios. They combine computer imagery, stop-motion animation, and real-time puppetry to create a wholly original new type of animation. Dynamic Duo is the debut of their style with co-founders Arthur Mintz and Theresa Anderson directing and producing the film.

Here’s what Safran had to say about their style.

“I think that the Swaybox technology is as original today as Pixar was when it did Toy Story. I really think it’s that different from anything that’s come before it. Even though it’s puppets with an overlay of CGI, the fact that it’s shot with real cameras brings a visceral nature to the action in a way that I don’t think animation itself ever can really capture. I am really, really excited for people to witness what Arthur [Mintz] and Theresa [Andersson], who are the Swaybox founders, have come up with. I think it’s really unusual and cool, and it’s a great way to tell a story.”

While we don’t have a lot of information to go on about Dynamic Duo yet, it is exciting to finally know some of the cast. The DC Studios film slate started off strong with Superman, and Clayface has also been doing well with audiences and at the box office. Its swings like this that’ll really set them apart from the pack when it comes to superhero and comic book films.
