‘Devil May Cry’ Confirmed To Be Trilogy With Third Season Renewal

Devil May Cry has become a wild success story with the recent premiere of its second season on Netflix on May 12, 2026. All in spite of its mixed reception from fans of the Capcom games the show is based on to boot. And really, you can see why when you watch it. If there’s a show that is even less faithful to its source material, I haven’t seen it yet. Showrunner Adi Shankar is clearly doing his own thing rather than following any of the games’ storyline. However, as critics and audiences prove, it’s a very good storyline in spite of that. Even Netflix reveals that season 2 has accrued 6.4 million views in just two weeks. I do believe this is why Netflix has such high confidence in this show, and we’re getting this particular story for today.

Netflix is proud to announce that they have renewed their animated adaptation of Devil May Cry for a third and final season. All on top of Netflix revealing that the recent second season is still on Netflix’s Global Top 10 List as of this writing. Alas, this announcement does not include even a general release window, let alone a precise release date. However, we do have a quote from showrunner Adi Shankar himself explaining his reasoning for this upcoming third season. You can check out that quote below:

For those of you who have been paying attention to the episode names, I have been showing you the structure the entire time. This was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat. Season 1 was Inferno. Season 2 was Purgatorio. Season 3 will be Paradiso. These three seasons make up “The Force Edge Saga.” Since inception, “The Force Edge Saga” was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series.

I daresay that Netflix have a veritable hit on their hands here.

Ah, I see what you did there, Adi Shankar. You and your Divine Comedy references, but it’s quite appropriate for a TV series and a video game franchise where the main character is literally named Dante. In fact, Hideki Kamiya, the creator of the original Devil May Cry games, also drew upon Divine Comedy for the story of those games. It’s just that the two creators are clearly diverging here with how they use Dante Alighieri’s classic narrative porm for their works.

And yet, despite those differences, both the Devil May Cry video game franchise and its Netflix animated adaptation are huge hits with audiences. It really shows that both Hideki Kamiya and Adi Shankar are brilliant creators in their own unique ways. Of course, your personal opinion on this might differ depending on whether you were a fan of the video games before the show’s premiere or not. Especially since Shankar’s vision of Devil May Cry differs so much from the original video game story.

Speaking for myself though, I do believe that Shankar has managed to make his own vision for Devil May Cry stand out in all the good ways. It gives enough nods to the video game franchise that it doesn’t completely cut it out of the loop, but it also does its own thing well enough to make the Netflix show stand out and be a star on the screen. Your mileage may vary though, so take it with a grain of salt until you’ve watched it for yourself exclusively on Netflix.

What do you all think? Are you eager to find out more about this mysterious “Paradiso” season that will end Netflix’s Devil May Cry? Or are you a new viewer who’s interested in watching the show now? Or perhaps you have some strong words to say about the Netflix version as a fan of the games? Tell us your devilish thoughts in the comments section below.
