Dale Gribble spent the original run of King of the Hill sounding like the most unhinged man in Arlen. Fifteen years later, the internet and modern conspiracy culture have turned his paranoid worldview into something disturbingly ordinary. Toby Huss, who now voices Dale after previously bringing Kahn and Cotton Hill to life, believes the character’s biggest problem is no longer being too far outside the mainstream. America has finally caught up with him.
Dale Gribble Is No Longer the Craziest Man in King of the Hill
Dale built his identity around secret plots, shadowy organizations, government surveillance, and whatever else entered his head after several hours in the basement. That once made him an absurd contrast to Hank’s rigid practicality. Today, much of it sounds like something a relative might confidently share on Facebook.
“It’s so crazy to listen to Dale, you know, 15 years ago and go, my God, this is mainstream now. There’s nothing crazy about Dale anymore. It’s weird.”
That cultural shift forced the revival to reconsider how it writes Dale. Simply giving him more conspiracies would not automatically make him outrageous when real people regularly produce stranger material before breakfast.
“The country has caught up with Dale finally, and it’s, that’s disconcerting.”
Dale has not become more reasonable. The world around him has simply gotten much better at speaking his language.
Dale’s Paranoia Still Has One Massive Blind Spot in this season of King of the Hill
Even if Dale occasionally sounds tuned into society, Huss does not see him as some misunderstood prophet. Dale remains hilariously incapable of noticing the painfully obvious conspiracy inside his own home.
“He’s blind to his marriage, so that’s one of the most incredible things about him. That’s the thing where there’s absolutely no conspiracies. There’s no conspiracy, he’s blind to that.”
Dale can connect unrelated government agencies, aliens, pesticides, and pocket sand into one elaborate theory. He still cannot connect Nancy to John Redcorn. That contradiction remains one of the character’s greatest jokes and keeps his occasional flashes of insight from making him too competent.
Toby Huss Sees the Sensitivity Behind the Sunglasses
Huss also approaches Dale as more than a collection of theories and catchphrases. Underneath the sunglasses, cigarettes, and aggressive distrust sits a deeply vulnerable man.
“I think Dale is a fragile guy. He’s really a sensitive dude inside, and he covers it up with a ton of things.”
That sensitivity helps explain why Dale understands Bill despite constantly mocking him. Both men hide their insecurity differently, but their shared vulnerability creates a strange emotional connection. Dale may think the government controls the weather, but he can still recognize another wounded person.
