‘cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood’ War Anime Film Acquired By GKIDS

two girls standing

cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood has an incredibly deceptive title. This 2009 manga and soon to be anime film by Machiko Kyō sounds like it’s a light-hearted story based solely on the title. However, if you look even a little bit deeper, you’ll realize that this entire story is the story of the Himeyuri students. They were a group of 222 students and 18 teachers of the First Okinawa Girls’ High School and the Okinawa Women’s Normal School who were essentially deceived into being conscripted into WWII, with the Imperial Japanese Army falsely telling them that they would be working in Red Cross hospitals far from any fighting. Instead, they were all sent into crude hospitals dug into caves at or near the front lines of the American invasion of Okinawa in 1945.

All in all, 211 students and 16 teachers of that group would die in the fighting. Thus, cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood is a very brutal war story on the level of All Quiet on the Western Front, and starring people who never should’ve been part of that war. It’s likely why GKIDS sees potential in that story, especially in our day and age, and thus why we’re getting this story for today.

GKIDS is proud to announce that they have acquired all NA rights to cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood. This will be the anime film adaptation of the war manga of the same name by the aforementioned Machiko Kyō. In fact, you can see the brutality for yourself in NA theaters on September 14, 2026. Alas, we don’t have a trailer, but we do have the key visual and a synopsis below:

I can already sense that this is not going to be a happy yuri story.

San and Mayu attend an all-girls school on a warm and tranquil island. When war reaches their shores, they are ordered to help nurse the wounded in a military hospital hidden away in a cave. Amidst escalating death and brutality, the friends struggle to find solace in their fragile lives.

Based on the manga by Machiko Kyo, cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood is the debut feature from Yukimitsu Ina and animation studio SASAYURI, founded by former Studio Ghibli animator Hitomi Tateno. The project brings together legendary veteran animators like Akihiko Yamashita and Shinji Otsuka, known for their work on PRINCESS MONONOKE and THE BOY AND THE HERON, with a new, young generation of animating talent. Featuring a stirring score from kensuke ushio (A Silent Voice, Chainsaw Man), the film is a devastating yet beautiful plea for peace.

cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood All Set to Deliver War Horror and a Message of Peace to NA Shores on September 14

I’m going to be brutally honest here: looking the background of cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood nearly brought me to tears. The story of the Himeyuri students is basically a story of how disgusting and brutal war is. It’s basically a combination of All Quiet on the Western Front and This War of Mine, but done in an animation style reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli movie. I would highly recommend this anime film any day, but especially in this day and age when war is just breaking out everywhere across the world right now, often for the most idiotic of reasons by the most stupid of old men. If you want a reminder that war is not like how Call of Duty portrays it, then this is definitely the anime film for you.

What do you all think? Do you want a reminder of how horrible war is when cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood hits NA theaters on September 14? Tell us your wartorn thoughts in the comments section below.
