Marvel Comics Announces New Indiana Jones Limited Series

The most famous tenured professor of archaeology in all of entertainment is gearing up for another adventure thanks to Marvel Comics. At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, the House of Ideas announced that Indiana Jones will star in an all-new limited series this winter. And for his triumphant return to comic books, the iconic character made famous by Harrison Ford will have a superstar team of creatives working behind the scenes.

During the Lucasfilm Publishing panel, outgoing Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski shared that Indy will once again grace the pages of Marvel Comics for the first time since the 1980s thanks to the team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder, as well as cover artists Bryan Hitch and Alex Ross. Titled Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium, this five-issue story is said to be the beginning of a brand new era for the iconic adventurer set during the original films.

Aaron is the perfect person for this assignment. Not only was he behind the character-defining runs of Incredible Hulk, Punisher MAX, and Thor: God of Thunder (which eventually served as the foundation for Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder), but he also teamed with Lucasfilm in 2015 to help launch the acclaimed line of ongoing Star Wars comics. Now, for Indy, a character that the writer has loved since the age of eight, he’s bringing Dr. Henry Jones Jr. back to the era depicted in his cinematic debut. 

“This is the Indy of Raiders of the Lost Ark,” said Aaron in a Marvel press release. “Fresh off his harrowing experience on the island of Geheimhaven. Dark events were set in motion that day, strange new enemies have risen from the shadows, and, for Indy and Marion Ravenwood, the globe-trotting, punching, whip-cracking, and death-defying escapades, not to mention the archaeology, have just begun.” 

The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones

As part of his first stint at Marvel Comics, Indiana Jones appeared in a three-issue adaptation of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 before adapting his other movies as well. In 1983, he would go on to star in his own monthly series called The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, which would feature beloved characters from the franchise like Marcus Brody, Sallah, and Short Round mixing things up with original characters and stories. But by the time the 1990s rolled around, Indy’s series had wrapped up after 34 issues, and the licensing rights would go to Dark Horse Comics. 

While at Dark Horse, Dr. Jones starred in seven mini-series, including Indiana Jones and the Shrine of the Sea Devil, Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix, and Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny (which is unrelated to the divisive fifth movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). The company also released an adaptation of the computer game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, as well as a series based on the TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. 

For True Believers looking to catch up on the chronicles of Indiana Jones at Marvel Comics, the company announced that they will be releasing a brand new hardcover collection featuring all the stories from their corner of the franchise by some of the biggest talents of the 1980s, including David Michelinie, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, and John Buscema. Dubbed Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book I and Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book II, the leatherette-bound books will be released in September 2026, which offers just enough time to read these tomes before the new series comes out.
