“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War” Director Discusses Character Evolution
“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War” is the next chapter in the character’s long saga that sees him evolve in new ways, and there are few better authorities on that than director Andrew Bernstein, who has had a hand in some of the beloved character’s most memorable and pivotal moments.
Bernstein’s career as a director includes stops on some of the most celebrated TV series of the ‘golden age of streaming.’ He directed multiple episodes of “Mad Men” and “The West Wing,” to name a few, and commented on how, in each case, he would try to adapt and mold to the cinematic inspirations behind each show’s unique visual language.
He would do the same while directing the Jack Ryan series, but he knew for the film he’d have to take it up a notch.
Looking Back at Jack Ryan’s Classics
Bernstein looked to the Jack Ryan films of the 1990s for inspiration as he tackled the feature film jump for John Krasinski’s version of the iconic character. The earlier films provided a template of sorts for bringing the character’s covert ops to a larger canvas with higher stakes. Bernstein was also heavily influenced by the 1970s-era films in the subgenre.
Where Fans Last Left Jack Ryan
The story for “Ghost War” picks up after Ryan left the CIA. In the time since, wouldn’t you know it, a mission goes bad, and there is only one guy to call.
Ryan gets sucked back into the line of duty, and as the digging continues, he begins to see the bigger picture: a conspiracy, a rogue black ops unit, and a ton of high-octane action.Back for this (perhaps final?) round as well are James Greer and Mike November. Sienna Miller joins the unit as MI6 officer, Emma Marlowe, helping Jack and Co. try to determine who’s behind what, and how they can stop it. There are hints that the line between “good and bad” has been blurred, and it falls to Jack, and maybe even the audience, to suss all that out.
“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War” will be released on May 20, 2026, on Amazon Prime.
