A Talk With the Cast of ‘EVIL DEAD BURN’ [Interview]

Post Summary

Our own Junior Felix sat down with the cast of Evil Dead Burn to discuss the complexities of starring in such an intense film franchise. In the sixth installment of the Evil Dead series, the film follows Alice (Souheila Yacoub) and her late husband’s family gathering to mourn when the reunion takes a turn and members begin to turn into Deadites.

When asked about the emotional journey that was connected to such a physically punished character like Alice, Souheila Yacoub stated that she worked a lot with the director and co-writer to ensure a person centered on being human while being in a world surrounded by Deadites, saying, “We worked a lot on the fact that we wanted to have a real human being.” Yacoub emphasized the importance of ensuring that her characters’ experiences of violence could be relatable to audiences, especially for those who have experienced domestic violence or violence of any kind, as well as toxic relationships.

As for Luciane Buchanan, she shared how her ability to use Thya’s dynamic with Joseph (Hunter Doohan) helped her connect with viewers who can relate to being with a partner whose family can be difficult and to feeling unprotected. Due to Thya’s awareness of the grief and situation going on, Buchanan stated that “she (Thya) keeps a safe distance and doesn’t speak up too much… I think she’s more encouraging of Joseph to stand up for himself,” placing Thya in a supportive role that continued to add to the human experience that was being prioritized throughout the film by both the actors and the director.

When it came to talking about Joseph’s deep grief and fear and how it affected him on a physical level, Hunter Doohan shares how, when discussing the role with Sébastien Vaniček, they explored his (Joseph’s) family and their mistreatment of him. Doohan states that with that trauma came an emotional stunt in his character’s life, causing Joseph to “freeze up in these moments when it counts… he doesn’t know how to stand up for himself,” which leads him into this arc that feels human in his fear-based actions.

In his final question for the cast, Junior Felix asks about the complexity of playing individuals going through both physical and emotional battles all at once, wondering how they “found that point where the family drama and the horror stopped feeling like two separate things” and became one nightmare. Struck by his question, the cast felt that the script helped weave these battles together in a way that allowed them not to focus heavily on such issues and instead take the film scene by scene, focused on staying real to each other and their characters.
