What Jason Momoa’s Lobo Means for Aquaman

What Jason Momoa’s Lobo Means for Aquaman

Momoa Pulls Double Duty

DCU’s interconnected phase continues this summer with director Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl (2026). Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El herself, viewers will go on an intergalactic adventure in the DCU’s first ever Supergirl film. Of course Superman (David Corenswet) shows up and we finally see more of Krypto – Supergirl’s dog that Clark was petsitting in Superman (2025).

Supergirl gets roped into the revenge mission of a young girl whose parents were brutally murdered. Ruthye (Even Ridley) has a sword and a desire for blood that fuels her foray across the stars to seek vengeance. Along the way they run into a bounty hunter with a very familiar face. Jason Momoa plays the iconic antihero, Lobo. He’s gruff with an iron clad heart of gold. He gets paid to hunt, doesn’t care about the details as much as the deposit, and he’s ready to get his head and get out.

It’s a character many DCU fans will be excited about and one that Momoa plays deftly. In an interview with Warner Brothers Momoa talks about his initial desire to play Lobo despite also playing Arthur Curry aka Aquaman! The role was said to breathe new life into the DCU with the film Aquaman (2018). Momoa had this to say,

“Oh, I just wanted to be him; I just thought he was the coolest. You know when you’re little and you’re like, ‘oh man’ the way he looked – motorcycle, cigar, all the mischievous stuff he got into. I loved the anti-hero.”

Two Worlds Both Alike in Dignity

It makes sense and you can feel Momoa’s love and passion in the role. He’s having an absolute blast and it shows, making viewers hopeful for a solo Lobo film or at least an appearance in more entries. It begs the question, what about Arthur?

Yes, there have been a small handful of actors doing double roles in the various superhero universes, but usually there are conventions in place to alleviate any confusion. A character dies in one film, they’re “resurrected” as a new character in a new film. Sometimes animation gives actors more versatility to play multiple roles. It’s rare to have a character so forward-facing suddenly appear as another character. Yes, the makeup and prosthetics are doing a lot and Lobo’s gruffness is a far cry from Arthur’s laid back attitude, but his appearance in Supergirl is raising a lot of questions that aren’t about Supergirl.

Coincidentally, Momoa’s not the only actor from Aquaman to be doubled. Djimon Hounsou played Fisherman King Ricou in Aquaman and then was later seen in Shazam! (2019) and Black Adam (2022). Those films were part of the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) which started with Man of Steel (2013) and ended with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). Essentially, Aquaman is retired and enjoying life off of a tropical beach. In fact, The Flash (2023) with all of its timey-wimey shenanigans, was intended to effectively reset the DCEU and bring us to a different timeline or alternate universe.

Only One Can Stay

The DCU is planned as a “soft reboot” of the franchise meaning more emphasis on unknown or little-known characters and new worlds to build out and explore. According to James Gunn, although some characters would crossover – like Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker – no actor would be required to play two characters. Regarding Momoa, co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran said this in a 2023 Gizmodo article,

“Jason always thought Aquaman was a trilogy, in his own mind. But he also loves Lobo. He’s been very clear about that too.”

Safran and Gunn solidified that Momoa wouldn’t be playing two characters so it seems like the choice is made. So far it seems like a good one. Although I enjoyed the Aquaman films, it did prove disconnected. Aquaman’s world was underwater, making it difficult to tie-in other heroes to the action. It makes sense to bring a character like Lobo into the fold. He can exist anywhere and he always brings a good time.
