Bobby Farrelly Reveals the Line That’s Stayed With Him Most

Bobby Farrelly Drivers Ed

Bobby Farrelly has been responsible for countless iconic moments in comedy over the last few decades. His latest film “Driver’s Ed” stays in his genre of choice, but varies things a bit when it takes a slightly more wholesome, John Hughes-inspired angle on the coming-of-age road movie.

Farrelly knows that often times the moments that you think are best in a script don’t become the moments that play best on set, and even if they do, those moments don’t always work best in the edit. Last but not least, there are test screenings and live audiences who provide the final verdict on what worked, and what didn’t.

There is another even longer question for each comedic moment crafted by Farrelly and his teams. What moments stand the test of time?

In all his years lensing comedy, Farrelly cites one such moment that ran the gauntlet of trials, and somehow turned into something everyone keeps saying over and over again.

The moment and line felt like a cute throwaway to Farrelly at the time. But to this day, he hears it everywhere he goes. A testament to the inability of anyone to know what comedic elements will resonate from one phase of production to the next, or from one generation to the next.

Taking His Cues from Hughes

Farrelly looked to a very specific filmmaker for guidance when directing “Drivers Ed.” He long admired and enjoyed the John Hughes films of the 1980s that captured the near-universal experience of pain, drama, and humor of living through one’s teenage years. Those movies became his north star while directing newcomers and comedic heavy hitters in his newest effort. For Farrelly, the idea of having something that stayed funny while being honest about the experience itself was critical. He felt that the Hughes films of the 80s not only accomplished this, but did it in such a way that created a standard for excellence in the subgenre itself.

“Driver’s Ed” is out on May 16, 2026.
