Glee feels like a relic of the time it was brought to us in. Unapologetically millennial, horrifying, and filled with storylines that make you question whether or not it actually happened, the series was far from perfect. Especially with how the fanbase of the show would fight with each other over every little thing when it came to their favorite characters. Now that the show is set to come back on Disney+, that same energy is showing itself.
When Glee was on the air, everyone fought about their favorite characters and relationships and what we wanted to happen. It doesn’t mean that the show was great, it just meant that we, as fans, were dedicated to the show. The return of a show like Glee is just as cursed as you would think, mainly because the show ended up being just okay in the end.
Those of us who were “Gleeks” fondly make fun of the show but the latest round of fans are treating the news of Glee returning like a great series is coming back and it is a reminder that there are people who view Glee very differently than others. Ultimately, the show coming back is both a blessing and a curse because that’s what Glee was. When it was good, it was perfection. When it wasn’t? Well, we don’t talk about the bad seasons of Glee for a reason.
This probably isn’t going to end well

It is important to remember that Glee was, at best, messy. The relationships between teachers and students were blurred, the storylines were horrible at times, and some of the things the kids in Glee club would do to be successful would probably end them in jail. That being said, we all clung to the series for a reason. It was a show that allowed the underdogs a chance to win and many theatre kids saw themselves in the characters, myself included.
But there is a “if Glee was still on, this would have been-” joke about music for a reason. The show loved to shoehorn a song into the show and make it fit when it probably shouldn’t. It loved to do the absolutely unhinged and make it work. And for that, a return to the show could be worth it and fun. But seeing how everyone is reacting to the news that Glee is returning doesn’t really give me a lot of hope for how we all will engage with the series itself.
