What Is Hope About?
NEON has some high hopes for this film. At the most recent Cannes Film Festival, this film was lauded by attendees. During CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, people in the crowd for this film were absolutely stunned by the trailer. Here’s the synopsis for the film.
In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police outpost chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village.
In the nearby forest, a coterie of local hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems,
and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.
THS Has A Take
There’s really no argument that horror is having a moment right now in the popular consciousness. Releases like both Obsession and Backrooms have done monster numbers at the box office. Hope looks to be a surprise entry that could end up being the biggest movie of the year in critical circles. This director already has a burgeoning fan base with The Wailing, and now we’re taking things even bigger with Hope.
In some preliminary comments about this film, Nah explained why this device of humans versus aliens takes center stage. As with most great sci-fi, it’s really a lens to dissect conflict. And, it looks thought provoking while maintaining a visceral edge that movie goers have responded to in droves over the course of 2026.
“Ultimately what this film hopes to explore and convey is the familiar adage that all the world’s tragedies stem from misunderstandings,” Na explained. “While audiences might feel they are watching a pulse-pounding action sci-fi epic, I wanted Hope to be a film that lingers in the imagination — a
story where the weight of tragedy between humans and aliens prevents spectators from simply laughing through all the excitement.”
