This month’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s “filmed for ScreenX” status breaking new ground. As the first movie to have that distinction, Tom Holland’s latest spin of web crawling will throw a brand new spotlight on company CJ 4DPLEX’s expanded ratio premium format. With just weeks to go until movie history is made, some pretty exciting news about ScreenX and 4DX’s 2026 performance (so far) may suggest it as an emerging format competitor.
ScreenX’s 2026 To Date Brings Record Revenue
Just in time to help hype up Spider-Man: Brand New Day, CJ 4DPLEX took some time to its financial results for the first half of 2026’s domestic box office run. An official press release from the company touts ScreenX alone as bringing in $31.84 million in grosses for the period in question.
This result was, “a 55.1% increase over the first half of 2025, reflecting growing audience interest in the format’s signature 270-degree panoramic viewing experience.” That’s not all the good news, as the total performance of CJ 4DPLEX’s twin premium offerings of ScreenX and 4DX adds up to a total $70 million. (For the curious, yes both of these formats will have Brand New Day available, on opening day.)
While that comparison only increases 26% from 2025’s revenue, claims of a growing audience continue to be extremely valid. That much can be seen in the major blockbusters that ScreenX celebrates in this press release, as well as some of the big ticket thrills still waiting to have a go.

Disney’s Role In ScreenX’s Future Could Be Major
To celebrate this sort of achievement must mean that ScreenX’s results at the domestic box office thus far are pretty sweet. Well, as you’ll read CJ 4DPLEX CEO Don Savant’s comments on the subject, a hit parade of what are arguably some of 2026’s best movies so far come into frame:
The first half of 2026 demonstrates that audiences continue to seek out premium theatrical experiences that offer something truly unique. The success of films such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Toy Story 5, combined with the excitement surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day, reflects the growing demand for SCREENX.
For those keeping score, here are the specific achievements for each of those titles:
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – $2.7 million – “…biggest opening weekend in SCREENX history (also, the highest-grossing domestic SCREENX release of 2026 to date.”
- Toy Story 5 – $3.8 million – “…the first collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and ScreenX.”
- Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu – “…the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend opening in domestic SCREENX history.”
Two out of three of those pictures are from Disney-related brands, which bodes well for the future titles highlighted in the back half of this announcement. With The Odyssey obviously heading into all premium formats available to humanity, that particular title is a given.
However one could say that so goes the House of Mouse, so goes the world. So Disney’s potential position as the first studio partner really investing in this format – thanks to Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and Whalefall both being on the docket, could be a game changer. Should this be true, then there are two more questions that will need an answer in the coming months: will ScreenX and 4DX auditoriums make a push to meet Marvel Studios’ Infinity Vision format standards , and can they do it in time for Avengers: Doomsday?
Eventually CJ 4DPLEX could give IMAX a run for its money. We’ll know soon enough when Spider-Man: Brand New Day (“shot for ScreenX”) releases into theaters on July 30th.
