Grand Theft Auto VI’s Debut Gets Some Surprising Twists, Just Hours Before Pre-Orders Start

It’s hard not to bask in the neon glow of Grand Theft Auto VI’s glorious box art, especially with the pre-order gates opening on June 25th. After almost a decade and a half, Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive Software’s labor of love will take one step closer to booting up on current gen consoles.

But this overdue return to Vice City apparently comes with some catches, both pleasingly predictable and kind of shocking. So before you buy your ticket to the land of Tommy Vercetti, let’s get a lay of the land for Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders.

It Sounds Like Grand Theft Auto VI Is Totally Digital

Let’s just get the shocking part out of the way first. For years, the debate over “physical” versus “digital” distribution in games has led to everything from price differences to an entire divide in console variants.

And now it looks like this “single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet” is not meant for a physical disc. That’s what seems to be the case in this excerpt from Rockstar GamesGTA VI pre-order press release:

The physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading.

So as of midnight local time on June 25th, no matter which version of Grand Theft Auto VI you’re ordering, it won’t be on an actual disc. However, at least physical codes are available on the same day digital players will be pre-loading; so everyone can jump in at the same time.

One does have to wonder if the “Physical Edition” comes with maps, stickers, and other sorts of ephemera that immerses the gamer in the modern Vice City. It’s certainly a matter to keep tabs on, especially if Rockstar further explains the decision to go full digital. In the meantime, let’s navigate through some more familiar territory when it comes to gaming retail.

The Unique Perks Of Grand Theft Auto VI

Now if you’re pre-ordering Grand Theft Auto VI’s standard edition, you’ll be forking over $79.99 to play it on your choice of console. That’s the base experience, with Jason and Lucia’s tale of criminality unfolding on your Playstation or XBox. Wait, what’s that on the horizon?

That’s right, it’s two words that change everything: “Ultimate Edition.” According to this GTA rundown, upgrading does have its rewards:

The Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition amplifies this experience with an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, and will be available for $99.99.

I don’t know about you, but I had to check the official Grand Theft Auto VI site for further details. And sure enough, you can see items falling into each of those buckets on display. Which is how I can tell you the “action” in the “Ultimate Edition” ranges from specific businesses and services, to an entire gang compound.

No matter what package you decide to take home, there’s one final raft of benefits that those who pre-order this would-be gaming blockbuster will enjoy. So put aside the “Regular vs. Premium” debate for now, and read this:

All Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders and purchases before November 20, 2026, will include the Vintage Vice City Pack, a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest, alongside a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders, which will be the best way to get the most out of the ever-evolving world of GTA Online and instantly redeemable so that players can jump into Grand Theft Auto V and other classic Rockstar titles as part of the GTA+ Games Library.

Pre-ordering may be a point of contention with some, but the goods being offered with Grand Theft Auto VI are pretty spectacular. Now let’s just hope that classic game library includes the original versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Perhaps that’s another topic to discuss as we make our way to the November 19th launch day; and if you want to stay in the conversation, THS Gaming News is where you need to be.
