There’s quite a history behind Warner Bros. and its efforts to translate The Jetsons into live-action. Last October saw a new chapter opening, with Jim Carrey rumored to star as George Jetson, in a movie co-written/directed by Jurassic World vet Colin Trevorrow. While there’s still no movement on the latter half of that formula, the former has a rather pleasing update – straight from Warner Bros. Discovery!
Jim Carrey Is The Live-Action George Jetson
Accompanying the company’s Q2 Earnings Call was a letter from WBD Investor Relations, which laid out some of the plans for the company’s near future. Peeking past Warner Bros’ robust 2027 lineup, which includes the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow and Bradley Cooper/Margot Robbie’s Ocean’s Eleven prequel, the studio snuck Carrey’s casting into the pack thusly:
Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon’s Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next installment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey.
As Warner Bros’ continues to talk up its strategy of leveraging known IP for cinematic glory, these updates are pretty big. Though some details are still missing, like if the Game of Thrones film above is from Beau Willimon’s March 2026 script, or if The Matrix continues under Drew Goddard’s leadership. Such talent would seem like a slam dunk to be included in an investor’s letter; so their absence stokes uncertainty.
Even The Jetsons has a big punctuation of inquisitive nature, as Colin Trevorrow’s involvement hasn’t been set in stone. Not to mention, there’s now an even greater importance on casting the rest of the Jetson family around the How The Grinch Stole Christmas star. However, there’s one thing you can take to the bank today, and that’s the fact that Jim Carrey is a perfect fit to play The Jetson’s futuristic patriarch.
The Jetsons And Jim Carrey Are A No-Brainer
Over the course of 41 years, and a handful of studios, only one Jetsons movie has ever hit theaters: 1990’s animated adventure Jetsons: The Movie. It’s no surprise that trying to bring the space-age future of George, Jane (his wife), and the rest of the family to live-action isn’t exactly the easiest feat. After all, if Robert Rodriguez finds making a Jetsons movie difficult, who could even dream of taking up the task?
However, much like The Flintstones’ 1994 venture into flesh and blood, excitement is a direct hit of the casting of Jim Carrey as George Jetson. Much as John Goodman was the ideal Fred Flintstone, the fantastical world of Hanna-Barbera’s classic comedy is something you could totally see the Sonic the Hedgehog series vet in.
If anything Carrey proved himself ready for this opportunity in 1998’s The Truman Show. As his Truman Burbank has the earnest sweetness you need for The Jetsons to work, all you need to do is mix that with his body bending antics for perfection. Embodying both the sitcom dad energy of the iconic Spacely Sprockets employee, the classic Carrey physicality of The Mask fits George’s struggles with technology.
It’s still way too early for anyone to really get worked up over The Jetsons; as it will need to be meshed well with Mr. Carrey by the rest of the cast and creative team. So for now, we’ll have to return to the present day, as this project’s post-2027 intentions are still in the clouds. In the meantime, you can stream The Jetsons’ classic animated series on Hulu; if a futuristic pick-me-up is what you seek.
