Legendary Award For a Legendary Filmmaker
The name Walter Hill may not be instantly recognizable to everyone, but his work certainly is. The legendary filmmaker is set to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 21st Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Hosted and presented by The Alamo Drafthouse, Hill will also be the first honoree to receive a retrospective of his films at select locations nationwide this upcoming January. After the award presentation, Hill’s neo-western action film Extreme Prejudice will be screened followed by conversation with Hill about his long career and a Q&A from the audience.
Hill is a staple of genre filmmaking and screenwriting, delivering some of the most audacious and exciting works across multiple genres. His famed works include The Getaway, 48 Hours, The Warriors, Last Man Standing, and my personal favorite of ‘go for broke’ cinema, Streets of Fire. Across more than 20 feature films and a foray into television, Hill has displayed a mastery of range in his works. Everything from intimate character studies to full blow blockbuster spectacles and everything else in-between, Hill’s work has been critically acclaimed and cherished by audiences for decades.
“Walter Hill is one of the American cinema’s greatest pulp artists,” says Jake Isgar, Alamo Drafthouse Director of Alternative Content & Specialty Programming and Fantastic Fest programmer. “Showcasing his work to audiences coast-to-coast has long been a dream of ours, and one we can’t wait to fulfill.”
Fantastic Fest will take place in Austin, Texas Sept 17th – Sept 24th with special guests (including this award presentation and special screenings) to take place at The Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar cinema.
