Blue Beetle is officially returning to the DC Universe. Xolo Maridueña is set to reprise his role as Jaime Reyes, better known as Blue Beetle, in Man of Tomorrow. This film is the upcoming sequel to James Gunn’s Superman. The film is currently in production and is scheduled to hit theatres on July 9, 2027. This marks another major step in Gunn and Peter Safran’s new vision for the DC Universe.
Blue Beetle Continues His DCU Journey

Maridueña first debuted as Jaime Reyes in 2023’s Blue Beetle, directed by Angel Manuel Soto. The film followed a recent college graduate whose life changed forever after bonding with an ancient alien scarab. This scarab grants him an incredibly powerful suit of armour. While Blue Beetle arrived during the transition between the old DC Extended Universe and the new DCU, James Gunn later confirmed that Jaime Reyes would officially carry over into the rebooted franchise.
Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast shortly after Blue Beetle premiered, Gunn described Jaime Reyes as the first official character in the new DC Universe. Meanwhile, he called Superman the franchise’s first full DCU film. That announcement immediately positioned Maridueña as one of the cornerstones of the interconnected universe moving forward.
A Breakout Hero Returns
Maridueña’s performance received praise for balancing heartfelt family drama with lighthearted comedy and superhero action. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran previously singled out the actor’s ability to handle both the emotional and comedic demands of the role. He called it a star-making performance.
The role also carried historic significance, as Blue Beetle became the first DC film centred on a Latino superhero. Maridueña has frequently spoken about how meaningful that representation is. He expressed pride in helping bring Jaime Reyes and his family to the big screen for audiences worldwide.
Preparing for the role required a major physical transformation. Maridueña previously revealed that he gained roughly 25 to 30 pounds of muscle through weight training, martial arts, and a carefully managed diet. This was necessary to convincingly portray the armored hero.
What We Know About Man of Tomorrow
Man of Tomorrow sees David Corenswet return as Superman following his debut in James Gunn’s reboot. The sequel will reportedly force Superman into an uneasy alliance with his greatest enemy, Lex Luthor, once again played by Nicholas Hoult. The pair face an even greater threat in Brainiac. The iconic Superman villain will be portrayed by Lars Eidinger. This sets up one of the hero’s biggest cinematic challenges to date.

While Blue Beetle’s role in the story remains under wraps, his inclusion suggests Gunn is continuing to expand the interconnected nature of the DC Universe. Jaime Reyes’ advanced alien technology could make him a valuable ally in a battle against a hyper-intelligent being like Brainiac. Even so, Warner Bros. has yet to reveal exactly how he fits into the plot.
Blue Beetle’s return is also an encouraging sign for fans hoping to see more of the wider DC Universe introduced over the next several years. Rather than treating each hero as a standalone franchise, Gunn has consistently spoken about building a connected world. In this world, characters can naturally move between films and television projects. Jaime Reyes appears to be one of the first examples of that long-term strategy taking shape.
The Future Looks Bright for the DC Universe
James Gunn has repeatedly emphasized that only characters and stories that fit his long-term plans will continue into the rebooted universe. Maridueña’s return reinforces the confidence DC Studios has in both the actor and the character. This choice also rewards fans who supported Blue Beetle despite its challenging box office run.
With Superman, Blue Beetle, Lex Luthor, and Brainiac all set to share the screen, Man of Tomorrow is quickly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated superhero films on the 2027 release calendar. The film is scheduled to arrive exclusively in theatres on July 9, 2027.
