Tom Cruise’s need for speed ushered in a series of movies in the 80s and 90s that put his abilities to the test. We had the original Top Gun taking him to new heights (and eventually making him the fastest man alive) and in 1990 audiences were gifted Days of Thunder. Now, a new film is coming to us just as Cruise brought Top Gun: Maverick 30+ years later. And there is a pretty incredible addition to the cast this time around.
Cruise returning as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and he will produce the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. The original film, which was Cruise’s second collaboration with director Tony Scott but this time around following Scott’s passing, Jonathan Levine is set to direct with a script by Will Staples. What we know about the rest of the cast is limited.
It was announced however that The Odyssey star Anne Hathway is joining Cruise in the 2028 film. Hathaway is set to play the a team owner and engineer in the new film. The original movie had Cruise facing off with late actor Robert Duvall as well as Nicole Kidman, John C. Reilly, Cary Elwes, and more. The logline for the original film is as follows: “A hot-shot rookie stock car driver joins the high-stakes world of NASCAR, where his reckless talent and fierce rivalry push him to risk everything for the championship.”
No one does a legacy film like Tom Cruise
Cruise brought Top Gun: Maverick to theaters in 2022 and in many circles, people believe it is one of the films that helped save movie theaters. The legacy sequel took Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell back to Top Gun for a special mission with new pilots, including Goose’s son Rooster (Miles Teller).
Starring Lewis Pullman, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, and more, Maverick gave a new life to the Top Gun franchise in the way that, hopefully, this Days of Thunder sequel will. But who doesn’t want to see Cruise back behind the drive wheel?
