Johnny Depp Transforms Into Ebenezer Scrooge in New Featurette

Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is a classic tale for a reason, and it seems like there will always be new adaptations just on the horizon. What isn’t there to like about it? Mortality, the consequences of one’s own actions, the encroaching dread of unwanted ghosts forcing you to look back on your mistakes
— what more could you need?

Ti West is now taking on these iconic characters in his own version, succinctly titled Ebenezer. In West’s retelling, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, reimagining him as more than just the villain. Following Ebenezer Scrooge during that fateful Christmas night, the film is “a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future as he fights for a second chance at redemption.”

The idea of redemption for Scrooge is a fascinating one. With not much else shown yet, it remains somewhat of a mystery how the story will handle this time. But if redemption is possible, then the events of A Christmas Carol may look very different upon another viewing.

In a new featurette of the film, we go behind the scenes to watch Depp’s transformation into Ebenezer Scrooge. While doing so, his costars talk about what makes this adaptation so different, as well as what Depp brings to the role.

It is no surprise that Depp will be portraying this character. His career is full of larger-than-life performances, and West’s film is a perfect vehicle for the comedy that Depp is capable of producing. The new featurette is below.
