Eraser might be one of the more underrated films in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s catalog. The film from 1996 got a beautiful 4K restoration that was overseen by director Chuck Russell. It was released on digital and 4K UHD disc recently. We got the chance to sit down with Chuck to talk about his career, the 4K restoration, the movie, and even talked a little bit of A Nightmare On Elm Street.

If you’ve never seen Eraser, here’s a synopsis.

U.S. marshal John Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) “erases” the lives and identities of people entering the Witness Protection Program. When his latest charge (Vanessa Williams) uncovers a deal to put a new superweapon in the wrong hands, it’s a do-or-die assignment. Kruger embarks on a high-octane action spree to protect her. As exciting as it is entertaining, Eraser is unstoppable.

Chuck directed what most call either the best film or the best sequel in the A Nightmare On Elm Street saga with Dream Warriors. It was his directorial feature debut and I had to ask him about what he would do with Freddy and the films for a modern audience. His answer might partially surprise you.

Only with Robert England, if I was. And at this point there’s some secret sauce we’re brewing up, that’s not specifically ready yet. There are things that are hybrid films where there’s a process called beautification where they already make certain actors look younger. Robert could do it if he wanted to.

Another Elm Street would be wonderful, there’s not one ready. If I was to do it, it would only be with Robert England, whether it was just his voice or his motion capture. Robert is that kind of super expressive actor that really he owns Freddy.

Every time they try to do it without him, it doesn’t quite work.

So it might not be a confirmation or anything close to that, it’s something from a filmmaker who’s worked on Elm Street in the past with ideas.

Chuck also got down and dirty during the interview talking about the restoration process with WB Home Entertainment.

I was there every day. I have a good relationship with Warner Bros. What some directors don’t realize is this becomes your new master. So, this is the legacy of the film. I caught on one of my films, I caught colorists making the film too bright and having their own fun with the film, trying to be creative.

So, I tend to be part of the remixes and the new colorization. And this one is really the best if could be. It was a little nostalgic for me because we remixed the Dolby Atmos, which sounds amazing in the original mixing stage we did Eraser on. So 30 years later, we’re in the same place remixing the same movie.

Overall, it was a fascinating look at the 4K process for Eraser with Chuck.

You can grab Eraser on digital or on physical 4K UHD wherever you get your movies.
