Artificial Intelligence scared a star
Andrew Garfield stopped using ChatGPT after working on his latest film. The Spiderman actor plays Sam Altman in artificial coming up this year. He caught up with Variety at the premiere at the New York Film Festival and discussed how playing the OpenAI CEO changed his relationship with the technology. It’s been an interesting experience stepping into the mind of one of these executives. Check out what he had to say about the experience right here!
Andrew Garfield swears off ChatGPT
Artificial is coming out later this year. And, Andrew Garfield put down ChatGPT after playing Sam Altman in the movie. He talked to Variety about playing the OpenAI figurehead in the new flick. With the consumer backlash against the company and technology at large, this movie has carried a lot of interest outside of Hollywood. For the star, being closer to the story really affected him. Sometimes it’s good to look in the mirror.
“I got a bit scared,” Garfield told the outlet at the New York Film Festival. “I felt a little mistrusting of the technology. It feels like the people who are encouraging us to use the technologies don’t exactly know its capacities themselves. That feels a little irresponsible, to me personally.”
“Luckily, I don’t need [ChatGPT] in my life in the same way that other people in other industries might,” he added. “As an actor, I was using it as a kind of fancy Google for some research purposes. I know that it’s not what it’s meant for.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman comes into focus
With the plot of Artificial circling around the inception of consumer facing generative AI apps and programs, Garfield had no choice but to think about how he interacted with the software. During the same Variety interview, he was asked about the “looming spectre” of AI actors and the like. There’s nothing to be worried about because the technology just isn’t there. And, AI might not get there.
“I don’t think actors are going to be rendered useless,” Garfield said. “The soul of humanity is the soul of humanity. And I think actors are some of the people that have to hold the soul of humanity for all of us and stories.”
A THS Take About Artificial
In a lot of ways, 2026 is turning out to be the year of the tech executive biopic. The Social Reckoning has screened for critics here in Los Angeles, and The Fate of the Musk biopic hangs in the balance as the Tesla frontman Desperately tries to keep that film from seeing a wider distribution.
But, the people want to know about these largely influential figures that are shaping their everyday lives. With the public turning against data centers, and generative AI in their communities, wanting to learn more about the people foisting this technology on them is pretty rational. A movie like Artificial might have a higher ceiling at the box office than even the production company or these performers would have ever guessed.
