Who remembers reading Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid? They gave us the choice of how we wanted the stories to go. You went to page 63 and saw that your choice was horribly wrong and so you quickly went back to page 14 to take the other path through that mountain dungeon. Now it looks like we’re getting a movie based on that idea from Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett). Deadline is reporting that the filmmaking duo is directing a script from writer Tom BIssell.
The Choose Your Own Adventure series kicked off in 1979 from Bantam Books with The Cave of Time, a book by Edward Packard, who thought of the idea for a story with branching paths after telling bedtime stories to his daughters. There have been hundreds of these novels written over the years since Packard kicked the series off. The series has sold over 250 million copies worldwide and even influenced things like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch on Netflix.
Radio Silence are taking on the first major adaptation of the series for the screen. They’re behind the cult hit Ready or Not and its sequel that released earlier this year. They’re also doing the upcoming The Mummy 4 for Universal, which almost broke the internet when it was announced. They also brought back the Scream series with Scream (2022) and Scream VI.
Bissell is a screenwriter who has experience with interactive storytelling and an author of 11 books, including The Disaster Artist, which was turned into a movie from Seth Rogen and James Franco. He’s also written the TV show The Mosquito Coast for AppleTV, the second season of Andor, and the video game series Gears of War for the fourth and fifth installments.
As for storyline details or the plot of the movie, that’s under wraps for now. We can guess that there’ll be some choosing of your own adventure for at least the characters in the movie. There’s no word on if this’ll be an interactive movie for Hulu or something similar to Bandersnatch.
We’ll keep you updated on all things Choose Your Own Adventure as we get more news.
