Naomi Ackie Circles ‘They Follow’ Horror Sequel With Maika Monroe

The sequel to It Follows was announced a while ago, but we haven’t had any recent news for the film, until now. According to Deadline, Naomi Ackie is circling a role in the upcoming horror sequel They Follow. She’s in final talks to star alongside Maika Monroe in the follow up to the 2015 cult horror hit.

There’s no word on who Ackie is playing in the film, but that she will star and it’ll take place a decade after the events of the original film. Any other plot details are currently under wraps but should be coming out soon as we get more news about the film. The first film and this upcoming sequel are written and directed by David Robert Mitchell.

It Follows centered on Jay Height (Maika Monroe), a college student who becomes the target of an unstoppable supernatural entity after a sexual encounter. The entity takes form of random people around her, stalking her and her friends through the Detroit area. Jay grapples with the fact that she will only be able to escape the curse she has inherited by passing it on to someone else through sex.

The film also starred Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi, and Lili Sepe. The film ended up grossing $23 million on a budget of $500,000. NEON has the rights to the sequel. The film was officially announced in 2023 with Mitchell producing alongside Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

David Robert Mitchell also has the upcoming The End of Oak Street coming out later this summer on August 14th. That film stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor.

The THS Take – An Interesting Casting Wrinkle For A Cult Sequel

The idea of a sequel to It Follows is interesting. They Follow should see the supernatural threat coming from all sides. Where Naomi Ackie fits into that is the real question. She’s a fantastic actress who is one of the most in-demand in the business. She’s coming off roles in films like Sorry, Baby, Mickey 17, The Thursday Murder Club, and Blink Twice. Ackie is also in I Love Boosters, which just recently released in theaters to plenty of critical acclaim. She’s also in the upcoming DC Studios film Clayface, which is their first foray into horror movies. That film releases on October 23rd, 2026.

As for a sequel to It Follows, people have been clamoring for it since the original film came out in 2015. Society and the world has changed plenty since that film released, so it’ll be interesting to see where they go for a sequel. Maika Monroe has also made a star out of herself with roles in films like Longlegs and Reminders of Him.

They Follow should start filming this Summer, but it doesn’t have a release date yet.
