‘Planet Of The Apes’ Sequel Adds ‘Fantastic Four’ Director Matt Shakman

Planet of the Apes adds Matt Shakman as director.

Planet of the Apes is getting a Marvel-alum as its next director. Deadline is reporting that The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman is jumping on a new movie with writer Josh Friedman. The film is untitled, but a Planet of the Apes film and that Shakman is producing alongside Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

The plot details are limited at this time but they say it is not a direct sequel to the recent string of films from Matt Reeves and Wes Ball, with the most recent being Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.This is a new original story that Shakman and Friedman are developing.

20th Century Studios has made quite a bit on the Apes series in recent years. Its one of their biggest box office draws, gaining more than $1.7 billion at the box office. The first film was based on a novel from Pierre Boulle and released in 1968. The series since then has had four sequels to that original film, 2 TV series, a remake in 2001 from Tim Burton, and the 2011 reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes. There are also two sequels to that film in Daw of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

Matt Shakman has been an in-demand director after his work on WandaVision earned an Emmy nomination. He also directed the recent Fantastic Four: First Steps for Marvel. He’s also worked on Monarch: Legacy of MonstersThe Consultant, and Welcome to Chippendales.

Friedman is no stranger to 20th Century Studios, he co-wrote the blockbusters Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash.
