Earlier this year, we sat down with Repo! The Genetic Opera director Darren Lynn Bousman and writer Terrance Zdunich to discuss the anniversary and theatrical re-release and 4K restoration of their cult classic film. Now 18 years old, the film still resonates with its deeply dedicated fans and remains a staple of the genre for new fans to come. But it still has more to say: The cult classic is now on 4K for the first time in a stunning remaster approved by Bousman.
In Repo! The Genetic Opera, things look a bit different than they do now. In the not-so-distant future, a worldwide epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GENECO, a biotech company that offers organ transplants…for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession — and hunted by the REPO man.
Seeing the lasting effect of this film proves that cult classics are here to stay, and that maybe sometimes it just takes a little bit of time for their vision to be fully embraced the way that it should be. Bousman and Zdunich are still proud of this film, and they very well should be.
