Robert Eggers is a man who really knows how to bring fans horror movies. His latest venture into monster films has proven to be a perfect combination for the Nosferatu director. And now, he’s taking on the full moon with Werwulf. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the film takes us to the 13th century to the English countryside as a farmer tries to find himself through love. Well, and trying to find a way to not turn into a werewolf.
Werwulf is simply described as follows: “A tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.” The film brings Willem Dafoe back to Eggers’ world, continuing their collaboration through nearly all of Eggers work. Dafoe was not in The Witch but has since played a part in all of Eggers’ films after that. And it also reunites Eggers with Nosferatu star Lily-Rose Depp.
The new trailer gives a bit more insight into what Eggers has planned with Werwulf. A lot of it sets up how the man (Taylor-Johnson) is trying to hide among men and keep his family safe. His wife (Depp) talks about how good of a man her husband is but that isn’t enough to stop the spread of fear among the people of their village. One man (Dafoe) says that all the wolves will be killed and that he doesn’t trust Taylor-Johnson’s character. All of this leads to an eerie feeling throughout the trailer, making it clear that you can’t trust anyone except maybe the wolf himself.
Much like Nosferatu before it, Eggers is releasing the horror film on Christmas day, giving fans an alternate options for the holiday season. But who doesn’t love a good werewolf story? Especially one with Eggers’ unique twist on it? Part of what sounds so fascinating about this werewolf story in particular does come from Eggers view on thing. With Nosferatu, freedom drove a lot of Ellen’s choices in the end. With Werwulf, the film is seemingly planning to have love play a large part in what happens with Taylor-Johnson’s character.
