Tom Cruise is Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon who is faced with an impossible decision: Try to save the world or make money. Well, impossible for an oil tycoon.
The new film Digger from visionary director Alejandro Iñártitu brings us Cruise as we have never seen him before, which is saying something. But the final trailer for the film, which is set to release on October 2, gives us some new insight into what Iñárritu and Cruise are bringing to us.
Digger learns that his oil rig split an ice cap, sending a ton of issues his way. The biggest problem facing Digger is working with the President (played by John Goodman) and the advice of all those around him. What is fascinating about the trailers we’ve gotten from Digger though is that we don’t know much else.
Even if the film is a lot of Digger facing consequences, the look and feel of Cruise in these trailers is enough to have fans excited.
A weird Tom Cruise is the best
Movies like Tropic Thunder showed modern audiences that Cruise was willing to get weird with a role. Those who loved him as Lestat de Lioncourt in the 1994 adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire could have already told you that.
But Digger is, in that way, a return to form for Cruise who has been reliving his action glory days in recent years.
Movies like Top Gun: Maverick remind us of the movie star that Cruise is but Digger shows the prowess of Cruise as an actor. And this final trailer really highlights just how good Mr. Movie really is.
Many think Cruise could get Oscar glory for this movie and if this trailer is any indication, that isn’t too far of a leap. Digger hits theaters on October 2.
