A “grotesque, shameless, and an utter disgrace from start to finish,” Zack Snyder’s beloved passion project, The Last Photograph, has been described.
Critics Not Vibing With Snyder’s Latest Film
It recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and the early reactions have been visceral and plentiful. Elizabeth Mulloy wants to put Snyder in “directors jail permanently,” calling the film “aimless, contrived, misogynistic,” among many other things. Jason Gorber called it an “abortion of a film,” which is an incredibly brutal view of an independently made project. It takes a special kind of film to unite people everywhere against it like this. Maybe a communal disgust at movie can finally unite this country.
What’s The Fuss All About?
The film, one that Snyder has been working on since the early 2000s, is described as:
“An ex-DEA operative must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents. Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”
Snyder is obviously no stranger to divisive and negative opinions on his projects. In fact, he’s built a rabid fanbase partially based on that. However, these reactions have to be pretty sobering to experience after spending years trying to get this film made. Even some of his fans are throwing up their hands, calling the film “indefensible.” Although most directors take reviews with a grain of salt, this film currently has no studio or streaming service attached and distributors might react unfavorably to all this hubbub. Maybe the bad press will work in its favor, sometimes it happens (*cough* Morbius *cough*).
“The Last Photograph” stars Stuart Martin as Ethan Black, along with Fra Fee, Jackie Kay, Sergio Herrera, Marlon Moreno, Costanza Andrade, Gustavo Angarita Jr., Carolina Henao, and Ed Hughes. Produced by Snyder himself along with his wife, Deborah Snyder, Gianni Nunnari, and Wesley Coller, with music by the iconic Hans Zimmer, it almost seems like it’s worth the watch to see if it lives up to the anti-hype.
